What's in this Year: 2022 Interior Design Trends
Naturally, the start of a new year comes with many shifts. Whether setting intentions and new goals is your thing or not, everyone looks to the new year as a reset in some way, shape, or form. For interior design, the shift to the new year sparks the same debate every year: what’s “in” and what’s “out”.
Although we don’t subscribe to designing based on trends, the fact remains that the world around us is constantly evolving, and this evolution is often reflected in our homes and spaces too. Also, we aren’t going to lie, seeing our favorite patterns, colors, and materials transform and take on a new life over time can be pretty exciting. Now that we are a month into 2022, our team has spotted six interior design “trends” that we anticipate will completely take over this year. Take a peek at Atelier Interior Design’s line-up of 2022 trend predictions:
ALL THINGS CURVY
For the last several years, the boxy, modern look has reigned in the interior design world. Not in 2022 though! From curvy furniture to curvy lighting, homeowners and designers alike are taking interest in curvaceous design elements. With the fun, welcoming, feminine mood that curves evoke in design, we wouldn’t be shocked if this trend stuck around for years to come.
MOODY COLOR PALETTES
Moody color palettes are a mood this year! If you’ve been on Instagram at all over the last few months, you know that dark wall colors and design elements are taking over. Here at Atelier, we find our clients’ palettes fitting into this same mold while also being super white/grey forward, which we love. Moody palettes are great for creating a balance between comfort and an elevated sense of style - we can’t get enough of them.
WALLPAPER. EVERYTHING.
If the number of interior designers that took the leap into experimenting with wallpaper last year tells us anything, it’s that this year the use of wallpaper is going to really take off. We aren’t just talking wallpaper on walls either. We’re talking wallpaper on everything and everywhere - on ceilings, as backsplash, inside cabinets/furniture… everywhere. Wallpaper is having a well-deserved moment and us color, pattern, culture lovers are here for it!
BANQUETTES
You can bet 2022 is going to be the year of the banquette! From a design standpoint, banquettes offer a very efficient use of space, not to mention the possibilites are endless when it comes to creating and designing them. Stylish, comfy, space-saving, intimate, versatile - you name it, a banquette has it covered.
REAL ART
From what we’ve seen so far, 2022 is going to be the year for art - real art, that is. With the world wide web and the popularity of antique/thrift stores, people are discovering real art isn’t hard to find nor does it have to be super-pricey. Whether you’re a homeowner or designer, you can find and shop paintings and photography from emerging artists on Instagram and Etsy, cut images out of a picture book and frame them, print your own travel/scenic photos or visit local markets and festivals for one-of-a-kind pieces. Next time you need wall decor, we encourage you to think twice before turning to a traditional retail store. Instead, have fun with the process and think outside of the box when it comes to where to source the real art and photography you’re in need of.
USE OF ALL WOOD TONES
In 2021 we saw the return of wood in interior design. 2022 is going to be the real comeback though as it is taken a step further with using and mixing various wood tones together. If cozy is the goal, we suggest mixing several wood tones to create an extra sense of warmth. If you’d rather lean more modern, stick with just one or two, but make sure they make an impact.
